Hello, Drawing Book readers! I’m back again for another week of comics from my old sketchbook journal series. But this week will be short and sweet, because things are busy. Here goes!
Last time we looked at the drawing book, we were somewhere in the middle of the year 2000, when I was working as a flight attendant in Calgary, figuring out how to write comics. At that time, I was exploring this format of a two-panel page - as though each page were its own, self-contained short story. There are still a few more pages in this format. Like this one:
I did paint my living room, and I really loved it! If only I had more time today, I’d dig up an old photo. Maybe I can find one another time.
This next page has already appeared in a previous Drawing Book newsletter, but here it is again, since this is where it actually shows up in my sketchbook:
As for these next pages, well, I don’t think they need much explanation…
I still remember that New York City layover. I just lay in bed and drank expensive orange juice. Luckily, I got better!
Here’s one last page commemorating a performance at Calgary’s historic Garry Theatre, by Eric Amber and Derek Flores, stars of the city’s improv scene many years ago. Their “Hot Nuts and Popcorn” live show was the funniest thing happening in Calgary back then. I’m not linking to anything, because I can’t find much evidence of that old show, online. I WISH I had some notes from those shows, but I was always laughing too hard to draw anything. Anyway, in 2000 when I was writing these comics, Eric and Derek performed their rather irreverent take on “Macbeth.” It was great!
Little did I know, back in 2000, that I was still going to be a flight attendant for twelve more years (wow!), and that my adventures in comics were only getting started.
That’s all for today! Have a wonderful week and see you next time!
