Hi friends! I’ve been using this Substack to post some Bob Dylan comics, and some old comics from my art school drawing book, but today I’m sharing some new comics from my current sketchbook. This month’s adventures start with a bus ride up to Edmonton (in early November) and some existential questions…
I wrote some comics about that trip to see a Bob Dylan concert just last month, and you can see them here! But back to November. I made it to Edmonton…
I made it back to Calgary for a small and cozy birthday party with a friend who’s the same age as me…
…and I made it over to The Sprawl’s new Calgary office! It’s in a basement full of printing equipment!
In case you aren’t a local Calgary reader and you haven’t heard of The Sprawl, well, it’s a Calgary-based independent journalism outlet that I’ve been writing comics for, during the past few years. Maybe you would like to check out our latest collaboration - a print-and-fold-yourself zine about Calgary streetlights! Here’s an excerpt.
These days, The Sprawl has been having fun with some hands-on printing projects. This is me, learning to operate the letterpress!!
All this reminds me of this page I drew in my old drawing book (you can see more pages from it, here). Back when I was a student at OCAD (now OCAD University), I did a little printmaking - something I really liked learning about. But I think I had even more fun drawing about printmaking, than making the actual prints.
Well, I drew that page back in the late 90s. Now it’s 2023, and it’s November…
I went for a walk with my son’s class. I wonder if The Sprawl streetlight zine project made me look particularly closely at the streetlights?
And now it’s today. I made it through the day, hooray! Hope you did, too!
Thanks Ximena! :)
Happy belated birthday, Sam!
